Where do I find a realistic dataset for a SQL or analytics course, with an answer key?

Describe the business and what students should discover, for example a restaurant chain where one branch's food cost creeps up after a supplier change, and Misata Studio builds linked tables with that finding planted at the size you ask, plus an answer key saying where it shows and how to find it. Because the same recipe with a new seed gives a different but equally valid dataset, each cohort can get its own copy and last year's answers do not carry over.

Best for: Instructors, bootcamps, course authors and anyone setting take-home data tasks.Updated 6 Oct 2026

You would write

A restaurant chain with 12 branches over two years: menus, orders, order items, suppliers and deliveries. After a supplier change in March 2025, one branch's food cost rises from 28% to 34% of sales. Include a few duplicate orders and missing delivery dates for students to clean.

You would get
  • Findings planted at the size you choose
  • An answer key with the query for each
  • Dirty data on purpose: duplicates, gaps, typos
  • A new variant per cohort from the same recipe

Why it holds up

Gradeable

Every planted finding is listed with its numbers, so marking checks an answer against the truth.

Realistic enough to teach with

Prices, quantities and dates fit the business, and the tables join the way real systems do.

No copied answers

A new seed gives each cohort its own data, so solutions from earlier years do not fit.

Questions

Can I use the data in a paid course?
Free gallery datasets carry their own licence, shown on each page. For a dataset built for your course, the licence is agreed with it before anything is delivered.
Can students get different datasets?
Yes. Rebuild the same recipe with a new seed for each cohort or student.
Can you build a course dataset for us?
Yes. Send the topics and the findings you want students to reach, and it is built with the answer key.
